OpenAI taps MCA for help with ‘art-washing’

The means of art theft may be more subtle when it’s AI rather than a crew of jewel thieves at the Louvre doing the stealing, but it’s still robbery.

A crane lift, a handful of power tools, and eight pieces of priceless jewellery stolen from the Louvre Museum later, and art theft is suddenly the topic du jour.

Welcome news for this country’s artists and creators, who have been trying to get the government to listen to their warnings that their works are at risk from similar daylight robbery. That’s when it emerged that the Productivity Commission was examining whether tech companies like Open AI should be exempt from copyright rules that stop them mining text and data to train AI models.
