When a former Australian men’s cricket team coach was appointed to the board of the now-embattled Mineral Resources in late 2022, chairman James McClements said Justin Langer’s “outstanding leadership experience” would “enhance our focus on people and culture”.
This is an odd thing to say about a man who single-handedly created a generational war between cricketers young and old. A player revolt prompted Cricket Australia to cut short his coaching stint in the interests of “team unity” in early 2022. But clearly the MinRes board – now reeling from realisations of how founder Chris Ellison used the company’s funds as his own – saw some useful expertise in Langer’s colourful life wearing the baggy green.
