Trailblazing Sydney restaurateur Giovanna Toppi has died, aged 85, after a long illness.

The Naples-born matriarch migrated to Australia in her 20s and pioneered power dining in the Sydney CBD, first at La Strada in King’s Cross, and from 1988 at Ristorante Machiavelli, where she and her daughters made an indelible impression on the Sydney scene.
