If ex-Franchise Council of Australia executive chairman Bruce Billson hadn’t previously been such a visibly enthusiastic small business minister, his appointment as the new Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (replacing Kate Carnell) would surely harken the imminent neutering of the role.

As it is, the nation’s small businesses appear to hope he has, like the prodigal son, merely returned to the fold. Helped along, naturally, by his recent appointment to the $360,250-a-year position he helped create.
