This is why new housing isn’t getting built

All the talk is about the planning process, zoning and development approvals. But projects won’t go ahead if they don’t stack up.

Back in May, Reserve Bank chief economist Sarah Hunter put her finger squarely on the reason for the weak supply response to the housing crisis.

“New supply would take some time to materialise, given the current level of new dwelling approvals and the information from liaison that many projects are still not viable,” she said.
