Beijing Olympics seals divorce of sport and politics
Australia’s Olympic movement separated from formal politics in 1980 with the Moscow Games, and this week Beijing 2022 sealed the divorce.
Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates welcomed Wednesday’s announcement that the Coalition government, supported by the Labor opposition, would not send officials to the Winter Games, starting on February 4, but would still support athletes going.
