“Today, Victoria is an utter mess financially, so much so that it is referred to within federal government circles as Argentina.” So wrote Phillip Coorey, this newspaper’s political editor last month.
In the same way as Argentina, the country, required Javier Milei to begin fixing its economy – Victoria, our domestic version of Argentina, needs someone like a Milei, a Donald Trump (or Elon Musk), or a Jeff Kennett to save it. Victoria represents just under a quarter of the nation’s economy. A federal bailout of the state’s finances, as is now openly being talked about, will cost every Australian taxpayer.
