Australia has almost a decade to transition coal workers and their communities to new opportunities under a plan that would eliminate the industry in advanced economies by 2030 and from the rest of the world 10 years later, according to the UN’s top climate adviser, Selwin Hart.
Directly challenging Scott Morrison “as a matter of urgency” to commit Australia to net zero by 2050 and even more ambitious 2030 emissions reductions, Mr Hart will say on Monday that keeping the planet from warming beyond 1.5 degrees requires an urgent halt to coal.
