Troubled insurer Icare’s deficit blows out to $1.5 billion

A deficit at NSW’s embattled workers compensation insurer has blown out by more than $1 billion in six months as more workers file stress injury claims and return to work rates plummet.

Icare’s deficit ballooned to $1.5 billion in the second half of 2021, driven by a jump in the number and value of claims which pushed total liabilities to $22 billion compared to total assets of $21 billion.
