Sydney’s struggle to build enough new homes to meet demand and stabilise soaring prices is being made worse by a fight over whether existing households should pay much higher water rates to pay for the pipes needed to hook up new suburbs.
At the centre of the fight is a proposal by Sydney Water to hike water bills to pay for new capital works, which the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal dramatically scaled back due to cost-of-living concerns.
