One of the weird moments of cognitive dissonance at John Barilaro’s evidence to an inquiry into himself on Monday was how unselfconscious the former NSW deputy premier sounded describing it.

For starters, Barilaro explained how he convinced the government last year, almost as an afterthought, to turn six plum trade commissioner jobs into political appointments – including the New York posting he famously won.
