Supermarket inquiry ends not with a bang but a whimper

Instead of wagging fingers at the big chains for the economic challenges, politicians must get serious about tackling some of the underlying causes of inflation.

For all the sound and fury, the political crusade against Australia’s supermarket giants for the perceived abuse of their market power during a cost-of-living crisis has been largely discredited by the competition regulator.

After a year-long investigation, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has found no clear evidence of price-gouging or land-banking by the big chains.
