Superannuation funds must focus on delivering the best financial returns for members and not stray into risky nation-building projects, says former senior Treasury official Mike Callaghan.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Monday called for the $3.3 trillion superannuation industry to allocate more capital to projects deemed in the national interest, such as clean energy and affordable housing.
