A mayor who received a $50,000 speedboat from a developer seeking higher building approvals has avoided time behind bars, despite pleading guilty to corruptly receiving a secret commission.

Luke Smith, former mayor of Logan, one of Queensland’s biggest cities, on Friday walked from Brisbane’s District Court briefly smiling, after being handed a suspended jail sentence of 18 months and 120 hours of community service.
