The former chair of the Productivity Commission has implored the federal government to focus its efforts on lifting productivity in the care economy by curbing public spending and addressing strict staff-to-client ratios that stifle growth.
Michael Brennan said the sector had experienced a massive boom in the decade leading up to 2023, but noted it had been largely driven by increased labour as opposed to productivity gains.
