How Victoria’s property taxes killed 81,000 new homes

The Allan government’s tax-heavy approach is short-sighted and economically counterproductive. It discourages investment and ultimately reduces the supply of new dwellings at a time when we need them most.

This week’s Victorian budget made one thing alarmingly clear: when it comes to property, Victoria remains the most heavily and regressively taxed state in the country.

While the government’s budget tagline claims to be focused on “what matters most”, it is sidelining the very sector that underpins the state’s economy, builds new homes for our people, and supports more than 1.4 million Victorian jobs.
