Why the 'quiet Australians' back free trade
High support for free trade among the "quiet Australians" – lower-income, non-university-educated voters who swung to the Coalition at the last election – may have facilitated the passage of free trade agreements through parliament this week.
The FTAs with Hong Kong, Peru and Indonesia, which reduce tariffs and ease the movement of labour, were opposed by unions, which argued that the measures hurt local workers and impinged on national security.
