Why Jim Chalmers will have his ‘Wayne Swan moment’ with the super tax

There is zero chance of the new impost raising $40 billion over the next 10 years.

When Jim Chalmers took office in 2022, I was asked what kind of treasurer he would be.

I expressed hope, but uncertainty: “It depends whether he tries to emulate his hero Paul Keating, or his old boss, Wayne Swan. I hope it’s the former. I fear it might be the latter.”
