The government quietly hopes the Trump effect will boost its chances, but the focus of the election campaign will be resolutely on domestic cost-of-living pressures.
It’s an election writ small. Squabbling over whether a $5 a week tax cut from mid next year is better than a $14 a week cut in petrol costs over this year is just the start of a campaign that will be long on big talk, short on big-picture action.
