The independent member for Wentworth, Dr Kerryn Phelps, conceded defeat to Liberal candidate Dave Sharma, after the protest vote which brought her to power in the 2018 byelection failed to repeat the feat over the weekend.
More than 38,000 voters in the eastern suburbs Sydney seat cast their primary ballot in favour of Mr Sharma on the weekend, roughly 5000 more than when he lost to Dr Phelps in the 2018 byelection sparked by former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull quitting after he was axed from the top job.
