Promising signs from Brisbane lockdown as overseas cases mount

Western Australia has joined Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT in reporting no new COVID-19 infections on Sunday.

NSW earlier today reported six new cases of the coronavirus – three locally acquired and three in hotel quarantine – while Victoria's six new cases and the Northern Territory's two were all recorded in hotel quarantine.

The number of active cases nationwide stands at 315, while the national caseload since the pandemic began stands at 28,405, with 909 deaths.

In other developments today:

  • Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she was "very relieved" as Queensland reported zero local cases overnight, with 112 of the 147 close contacts of the hotel cleaner who contracted the UK variant of COVID-19 also testing negative. Greater Brisbane is in lockdown until 6pm Monday.
  • NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said it would be prudent for states to wait 24 to 48 hours before deciding to shut off NSW in future, laying bare interstate tensions triggered by the quick shutdown in response to Sydney's pre-Christmas outbreak.
  • Victoria's outbreak commander Jeroen Weimar has acknowledged the disruption caused by snap border closures and admitted a better system with sudden COVID-19 outbreaks expected to continue.
  • Britain's NHS is on the brink of being overwhelmed as COVID-19 infections hurtle ever upwards towards a third peak and the number of daily fatalities reaches more than 1300.
  • A sustained surge of coronavirus infections has locked Southern California in crisis, overwhelming intensive care wards, ambulance services, funeral homes and local officials.
  • Mass testing is under way in China's Hebei province to quash an outbreak which threatens the nearby capital Beijing.
  • Federal chief medical officer Paul Kelly said there had not been a COVID-19 death in Australia since October. He compared that to more than 1000 daily deaths in the UK and more than 4000 daily deaths in the US.
