The Queensland government has imposed a snap lockdown on 2.5 million people in Greater Brisbane as health authorities scamble to trace 80 close contacts of a cleaner who contracted the more contagious UK strain of COVID-19.

The cleaner caught the virus working in hotel quarantine and Premier Annastacia Pałaszczuk said the lockdown was needed to give authorities time to trace people who might have been exposed to the new strain.
