Vale Tom Hughes: Distinguished last cab off the rank
A giant of Australian law, reforming attorney-general and a powerful behind-the-scenes figure, Tom Hughes leaves behind a remarkable legacy.
Tom Hughes, a titan of the Australian Bar, one-time Coalition government attorney-general and a patriarch of the powerful Hughes family, died on Thursday after a long illness. He was 101.
At times moody, with a formidable temper, Hughes was also a warm, witty and loyal man, and a towering figure in court proceedings. His influence in business and political circles extended further than formal ties and career milestones suggest.
