Tom Hughes, a titan of the Australian Bar, one-time Coalition government attorney-general and a patriarch of the powerful Hughes family, died on Thursday after a long illness. He was 101.

At times moody, with a formidable temper, Hughes was also a warm, witty and loyal man, and a towering figure in court proceedings. His influence in business and political circles extended further than formal ties and career milestones suggest.
