Unions not to blame for Calombaris' business woes

Labor has rejected employers' complaints that unions' emotive campaign against "wage theft" is to blame for the collapse of celebrity chef George Calombaris' restaurant empire, which has left 400 workers out of a job.

Opposition industrial relations spokesman Tony Burke also challenged businesses claims that the award system was too complex as an excuse for workers being underpaid, saying the number of awards had been streamlined significantly since 2007.
