‘Three would be cataclysmic’: Why Aston is about more than one seat

Already on the backfoot with Melbourne voters, the party will be forced to ask itself some hard questions about relevance and leadership if the Aston byelection comes a cropper.

Many Melburnians might view the Caribbean Park Hotel as only an imposing glass and metal structure briefly glimpsed from the Eastlink tollway.

But for Liberal Party federal director Andrew Hirst, the outer suburban hotel has become a home away from home for much of the past six weeks. Such is the importance of Saturday’s byelection in the marginal federal seat of Aston that Hirst and some of his senior lieutenants have taken the unusual step of relocating to Scoresby, about 40 minutes drive from Melbourne’s city centre, to fight the campaign.
