Basil Zempilas, former TV star, radio broadcaster and the Lord Mayor of Perth, blamed a big-spending Labor attack campaign for his underwhelming performance in the Western Australia election.
Zempilas was on track to win the state seat of Churchlands and enter parliament, having secured a swing of roughly 4 per cent in his favour with counting still incomplete on Sunday.
