The Tax Office has conceded it caused unnecessary distress in pursuing historical debts from tens of thousands of taxpayers, pausing a push for repayments and promising to review its methods for unpaid liabilities.
In a scheme likened to the illegal robo-debt saga, tax agents around the country received letters about “on-hold” client tax debts from previous tax years, ranging from tiny amounts to thousands of dollars for their clients.
