Tap surplus for infrastructure spend: Labor MP

Labor should spend some of its expected $20 billion budget surplus on productivity-boosting infrastructure or carefully targeted cost of living help for households, government backbenchers say.

As Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers stress caution around the first budget surplus in 15 years, the Greens and the Australian Council of Social Service have called for increases to welfare payments and more spending on public housing.
