A Tamil family facing deportation will remain in Australia for another 48 hours after new information from government lawyers prompted the Federal Court to extend an injunction.

Government lawyers revealed on Wednesday that officials had considered a claim for refugee status for the family's youngest daughter, Tharunicaa, 2, but rejected it on Tuesday.
