Stunning victory is no vindication of Labor’s economic plans

Now the PM has joined the pantheon of Labor heroes, it may be naive to hope he will change policy direction. The worst outcome would be the ‘Victorianisation of Australia’.

Modern political parties are increasingly built on a shaky foundation of narrative rather than a solid platform of beliefs, values and, most importantly, policies for government.

At a time when getting just over a third of the primary vote in Australia is enough to secure a landslide victory, conviction politicians willing to make the difficult decisions necessary for sweeping reform are thin on the ground.
