Plenty of political blame to share as Australia’s luck runs out

While Victoria bickers over the Commonwealth’s financial assistance to NSW, it too might get to test the new funding package if it can’t control a new outbreak of virus cases.

Perceptions matter in politics, sometimes more than facts and figures.

Scott Morrison and Josh Frydenberg insist the figures demonstrate they are not treating NSW any more generously than they did Victoria. The difference in federal support is only because the NSW lockdown is lasting far longer than the recent two-week lockdown in Victoria. The same arrangements would apply to any other state in the midst of a protracted lockdown in future.
