Shelved report finds ID victims left to fend for themselves

A federal government review of identity theft was shelved after calling for a new agency to oversee identity management and help victims recover from breaches, similar to the Optus exposure of nearly 10 million people’s personal information.
The review for the Home Affairs Department estimated that about 500,000 identity credentials were either stolen or lost each year.
