Safeguard deal likely but $10b housing fund in jeopardy

The Albanese government is inching towards a deal with the Senate on its climate change safeguard mechanism, but its separate $10 billion housing fund is in jeopardy, as the Greens say there is next to no prospect of a deal before the May budget.

With this being the last sitting week before the May 9 budget, the government needs to pass both bills through the Senate. The Coalition opposes both, while the Jacqui Lambie Network supports both, giving the Greens the whip hand in negotiations.
