John Elliott was a man of big appetites who rose and fell in the world of business and politics. But he left behind a distinctive legacy.

The Man Who Would be King was a 1975 adventure film about a former British soldier, played by Sean Connery, who travelled to a mythical kingdom where locals mistook him for God and made him their king. The myth collapsed and he was killed.

John Elliott was an earthy man with big appetites who never aspired to celestial ranks. But at one point he was at the top of the corporate world, president of the Liberal Party, and touted as a future prime minister, he was long-time president of his beloved Carlton Football Club.
