The federal privacy commissioner’s investigation of Bunnings, Kmart and The Good Guys’ use of facial recognition technology to alert them to potential shoplifters is set to be a watershed inquiry into the use by business of advanced surveillance technology.

With facial recognition increasingly used by law enforcement, digital identity and border control officials, the case is likely to have significant consequences for the use of biometric technology in the public and private sectors.
