PNG security talks with China rouse local anger

Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkachenko has backtracked on the prospect of a security deal with China, saying he does not want to “jeopardise or compromise relations with Australia and the US”.

The Albanese government also played down the risk, as former PNG prime minister Peter O’Neill attacked his successor James Marape for entertaining a deal with Beijing as a way to stay in power.
