On a Tuesday evening earlier this month, hospitality entrepreneur Justin Hemmes hosted Opposition Leader Peter Dutton at his harbourside mansion in the Sydney suburb of Vaucluse.

Amid growing expectations that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was preparing to call a mid-April election, a quiet $25,000-a-head fundraiser on March 4 would have looked like clever timing from Dutton and his campaign team when it was organised.
