Clive Palmer's candidate in the Tasmanian seat of Clark has travelled to Japan at the height of the election campaign, escaping anger at his claims to be a descendant of former prime minister Joseph Lyons.

United Australia Party candidate Jim Starkey has repeatedly described himself as a great-grandson of Mr Lyons and his trailblazing wife Enid Lyons, despite family members said the claims were false.
