Nuclear submarine chief says local build to start by 2030

Defence firms and unions are warning a significant investment is needed to build up the industrial base and workforce if local construction of nuclear-powered submarines is to start by the end of the decade.

The head of the nuclear submarine taskforce, Vice Admiral Jonathan Mead, said on Monday the government was “absolutely committed” to building the submarines in Adelaide, fending off speculation an offshore build would be required for the first boats to speed up delivery.
