Labor will seek to unite supporters of an Australian republic on a workable model for constitutional reform in the second term of an Albanese government, after Australians vote on an Indigenous Voice to parliament.
Newly appointed Assistant Minister for the Republic Matt Thistlethwaite said the “twilight” of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign was the appropriate time to discuss moves to establish an Australian head of state, but any referendum would be held after the next election.
