The failure to build up Papua New Guinea’s economy posed a security risk to Australia and the region, the nation’s prime minister warned, in a historic first address by a Pacific Islands leader to federal parliament.

James Marape also reassured Australia about the strength of PNG’s ties with Canberra amid a flirtation with China that resulted in Australia’s nearest neighbour being offered a security partnership with Beijing.
