Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has seized upon Mark Carney’s come-from-behind election victory in Canada that was fuelled by his opposition to Donald Trump, as former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull urged Canberra and Ottawa to forge closer ties to fight back against the president’s policies.
Canadians strongly endorsed Carney, the former central bank governor in both Canada and the United Kingdom, who claimed victory in Monday’s national election after his centre-left Liberal Party fell just short of gaining an overall majority.
