In 1992, thanks to the determination of the late Eddie Mabo, a Murray Islander, the High Court ruled that Aboriginal people were the rightful custodians of the land. Jeff Kennett, then premier of Victoria, said suburban backyards could be at risk of takeover by Aboriginal people.
Thirty years later, another victory for the rights of Indigenous people is handed down by Federal Court Justice Mordy Bromberg and would have made Mabo happy (“Tiwi Islanders win case to block $5.4b Santos gas field”, September 22).
