ASIO has disrupted a locally based "sleeper agent" who helped orchestrate a campaign of harassment against dissidents and aided foreign spies who travelled to Australia, amid an unprecedented level of espionage and interference.

In a rare public address, Director-General of Security Mike Burgess has revealed foreign spies had travelled to Australia to set up computer-hacking outfits targeting classified information, and visiting scientists and academics also have collected intelligence.
