Labor to consider civilian disaster response workforce

Labor will consider the creation of a new workforce to respond to natural disasters, as the increased frequency and severity of bushfires and floods threatens to make Defence Force involvement “unsustainable”.

Opposition defence spokesman Brendan O’Connor lashed the Morrison’s government’s response to record floods in Queensland and NSW, flagging consideration of a new civilian agency to respond to emergencies under an Anthony Albanese-led government.
