The opposition is accusing the Albanese government of opening the border to people smugglers after it was revealed the navy and air force had deployed extra aircraft and ships to support Operation Sovereign Borders.

At Senate estimates on Wednesday night, the deputy chief of the Defence Force, Vice Admiral David Johnston, said surveillance flights and sea patrols of the northern waters had been boosted recently.
