The Labor Party is divided over calls by one of its senior figures that Andrew Shearer not be made the next director-general of peak security agency, the Office of National Intelligence (ONI).
Sources inside the party said Mr Shearer was well-regarded by many, so much so that Bill Shorten, had he won the last election, was considering Mr Shearer as the likely replacement for the current director-general, Nick Warner, when his tenure ends.
