Indigenous groups will oppose last-minute efforts to introduce voter identification requirements before the next federal election, as a parliamentary committee asks the Morrison government for evidence of the problem it is trying to solve.

As crossbench dealmaker Rex Patrick called on Tasmanian independent Jacqui Lambie and Centre Alliance’s Stirling Griff to oppose legislation being sold as election integrity measures, Indigenous justice campaign Change the Record said Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders would be disproportionately hurt by the change.
