People with expensive homes should have to pay more for aged care, a leading economic think tank says, as the Coalition and industry providers signal support for plans for wealthier retirees to pay more.

In a plan designed to strengthen the sector ahead of a surge in demand, Aged Care Minister Anika Wells on Tuesday released recommendations from an expert review into the aged care system. They include the idea that a fee-for-service model is appropriate where residents can draw on healthy superannuation balances to pay for their care.
