Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan has resigned near the height of his political power, in a shock move that makes it harder for federal Labor to maintain majority government at the next election.
In a decision Mr McGowan said was borne from exhaustion after six years in office, the 55-year-old, who gained national prominence and stratospheric approval ratings for his hardline pandemic response, announced on Monday he would resign from politics this week.
